A team of USU lecturers conducted a community empowerment program in Nelayan Indah Village, Medan, to strengthen residents’ capacity for sustainable environmental management. The program included socialization, conservation training, and the formation of community-based environmental working groups.
A Community Service Team consisting of Dr. Eng. Ir. Hafizhul Khair A.M., S.T., M.T.; Rahmi Utami, S.T., M.T.; and Dr. Anthoni Veery Mardianta, S.T., M.T., carried out a community empowerment program focusing on “Enhancing Community Capacity for Sustainable Environmental Management (Case Study: Nelayan Indah Village, Medan).”
The program aimed to increase the awareness and skills of fishing communities in preserving coastal environments while supporting the sustainability of marine resources that serve as their primary livelihood.
The activities included socialization, workshops on waste and sewage management, conservation training, and the establishment of environmental working groups at the neighborhood (RT/RW) level.
The residents of Nelayan Indah Village participated enthusiastically in the program. The Village Head welcomed the initiative and expressed hope that it would serve as a starting point for sustainable environmental management efforts.
Through this program, Nelayan Indah Village is expected to become a model for community-based environmental management that can be replicated in other coastal regions.
