Medan – On August 27, 2026, the Undergraduate Program in Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, USU, contributed to efforts aimed at improving waste management governance in Medan City. This contribution was demonstrated through the active involvement of FT USU academics in the Coordination and Evaluation Meeting on Infrastructure Governance Policies and the Updating of Waste Retribution Data for Medan City, held at the Medan City PKK Building.

During the event, Fadhila, S.T., M.T., a lecturer in the Undergraduate Program in Environmental Engineering, FT USU, served as a keynote speaker to deliver academic perspectives on developing more effective urban waste management systems. The participation of academics forms a crucial bridge connecting science-based approaches with local government waste management needs.

The coordination meeting addressed several strategic aspects of waste services, including data-driven planning, infrastructure optimization, waste transport system evaluation, vendor performance monitoring, and waste retribution data updating. These interrelated components are essential to realizing an effective and sustainable municipal sanitation service system.

Discussions emphasized infrastructure as a critical factor in the success of urban waste management systems. Evaluating supporting facilities and transport processes is vital to ensure more effective service delivery while identifying necessary improvements or developments at every stage of waste management.

Collaboration between local government and academia creates opportunities for knowledge exchange to support more measurable and sustainable waste management. This initiative demonstrates the contribution of Environmental Engineering expertise in addressing urban issues directly linked to environmental quality and public services.

  • This activity primarily supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through the strengthening of urban waste service governance.

  • SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) is relevant through efforts to improve waste management.

  • SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) is reflected through the collaboration between the Medan City Government and academics from Universitas Sumatera Utara.
