Medan – On October 20, 2026, the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), hosted a collaborative discussion with PT Kawasan Industri Medan (PT KIM). The meeting focused on defining FT USU's role in implementing the scope of the Memorandum of Agreement recently executed between the two institutions.

The discussion focused on industrial zone development needs, including township planning and PT KIM's land expansion initiatives. FT USU expressed readiness to provide academic and technical input for concept evaluations, master plan formulation, supply chain optimization, and disaster resilience planning.

Water resource management emerged as a key focal point during the session. Explored contributions encompass identifying groundwater conditions, monitoring clean water supply systems, and regulating water usage among tenant companies operating within the industrial estate.

Both parties also addressed comprehensive waste and effluent management strategies. Options evaluated include implementing the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principles, processing solid waste into refuse-derived fuel (RDF), managing wastewater treatment plants (WWTP/IPAL), and utilizing palm oil mill effluent (POME) as a renewable energy source.

Furthermore, the discussion positioned the transition toward a green industrial estate as a strategic direction. Embracing circular economy models and minimizing waste residue are expected to drive operational efficiency while maximizing resource recovery across the industrial zone.

This strategic engagement directly supports SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through academic backing for industrial estate development; SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through advanced water management, RDF processing, and circular economy practices; as well as SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by cementing academia-industry synergy.
