A community service team from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), led by Ir. Rivaldi Sidabutar, S.T., M.T., conducted training and mentoring on Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot cultivation on November 24, 2023. The program introduced residents to the use of coffee husk waste as a feeding medium for maggot production that could be sustainably developed within the community.

Participants received training on the life cycle of the Black Soldier Fly, maggot cultivation techniques, the use of coffee husks as an organic feed substrate, and the potential applications of the resulting products. Through a combination of classroom instruction and practical mentoring, the program connected fundamental knowledge with hands-on organic waste management practices.

The community responded positively to the initiative, recognizing the value of coffee husk waste that had previously been regarded as a by-product with little economic use. The harvested maggots can serve as an alternative source of livestock feed, while the residual cultivation by-product, known as frass (kasgot), has the potential to be utilized as organic fertilizer. However, the long-term economic benefits will depend on the sustainability of cultivation practices and the community's capacity to manage the production system.

The initiative primarily supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production by transforming organic waste into valuable resources. It also contributes to SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth by creating opportunities for community-based enterprises and SDG 15: Life on Land through efforts to reduce the environmental impact of organic waste while promoting sustainable resource management.
