Research at universities is expected to provide new products that can be used in life. Through a research-based community service program, Prof. Rosdanelli Hasibuan created a creative paper.
This research program, chaired by Prof. Rosdanelli and member Prof. Irvan, involves six students, namely Philip, Athir, Bima, Ardi, Leo, and Sasro, in producing a creative paper. The paper produced in the Chemical Industry Process Laboratory (PIK) will be used as raw material for making creative objects such as tissue containers, pencil cases, and so on.
The idea to produce creative paper came from Prof. Rosdanelli's concern about the high price of paper. "The idea of making this creative paper came from the paper I saw for birthday greetings and invitations. I asked, why is this paper expensive," said Prof. Rosdanelli.
The raw materials for making paper are obtained from the area around the campus. The materials used include tares, leaves, bagasse, palm frond waste, and wood. The manufacturing process is carried out as in the manufacture of paper in general.
Once finished, the paper is then supplied to businesses or handicraft staff. "So we supply the raw materials to the businesses, and then they make pencil cases, tissue holders, bags, and so on," said Prof. Rosdanelli.
The presence of this creative paper also helps business people who have had difficulty obtaining paper. Because so far the paper used by business people in general still comes from Java.
