Three students of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FT USU), Tegar Lindu (230403001), Muhammad Rayhan Azbi (230403003), and Aldy Audri (230403011), carried out practical training at PT Perkebunan Nusantara IV Regional III Sei Buatan Palm Oil Mill. The activity took place from July 1–31, 2026, in Sawit Permai Village, Dayun District, Siak Regency, Riau Province, with a focus on the Quality Assurance division.

During the practical training, the students studied the quality inspection process for Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB), including the maturity criteria and condition of raw materials that serve as the factory's acceptance standards. The students also observed how quality parameters are monitored at several stages of processing, such as sterilization, pressing, and clarification.

In laboratory activities, the students studied methods for analyzing free fatty acid content, moisture content, impurity content, as well as the yield of crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernel. This process provided an overview of the role of laboratory data in assessing the quality of production outputs.

The students also studied the system for recording and reporting quality data and its use as a basis for production evaluation and decision-making. In addition, the activity introduced the implementation of company quality standards to ensure that CPO and kernel meet the specified specifications before being marketed.

This activity primarily supports SDG 4—Quality Education through direct learning in an industrial environment. SDG 8—Decent Work and Economic Growth is also relevant through strengthening students’ professional readiness, while SDG 9—Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure is related to understanding quality control systems in industrial processes. FT USU continues to promote practical training that helps students connect academic knowledge with operational practices and quality management in the workplace.
