Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) and the General Elections Commission of North Sumatra Province (KPU Sumut) have agreed to cooperate to ensure elections' success at both regional and national levels. The agreement was made at the KPU Sumut building on Tuesday (27/09/16). The cooperation with KPU was also carried out with eight other universities, namely UINSU, UMSU, UMA, UNIKA, Darma Agung University, Sisingamangaraja University, HKBP Nommensen University, and Al Washliyah Muslim Nusantara University (UMN), along with the inauguration of the Rumah Pintar Pemilu (Smart Election House).
Vice-Rector III Mahyuddin, Ph.D., representing the Rector of USU, stated that the agreement aims to optimize the principle of mutually beneficial partnerships and is intended for institutional development and improvement of work programs for both parties. The scope of cooperation, he said, covers education, research, and community service and will be followed up with various collaborations with units within USU and KPU Sumut.
Meanwhile, the Head of KPU Sumut, Mulia Banurea, mentioned that cooperation with nine universities in North Sumatra is very important, as universities are partners who play a crucial role in the success of KPU's mission, especially at the level of first-time voters. He stated that the cooperation, along with the inauguration of the Rumah Pintar Pemilu, is part of the KPU RI agenda aimed at providing political education to the people of North Sumatra and conducting voter education, particularly for first-time voters. Mulia hopes that the cooperation with the universities will run smoothly and continue with significant MoUs in the future, thus benefiting the community in achieving successful elections.
One of the students from SMAN 3 Medan, Dinda, who was invited to the event, said that the activity they attended was very important for her and her friends. With the inauguration of the Rumah Pintar Pemilu, she said, she became more aware of the ins and outs of elections, the requirements to become a voter, the history of elections, and the procedures for voting in elections. Dinda, who is in class XII MIA 2, encourages her peers to actively follow political news in Indonesia, ensure elections' success, and not abstain from voting. "My friends and I want to be able to participate in the upcoming democratic party, and we want to make it a success," said Dinda with a cheerful face.
The Governor of North Sumatra, Ir. H. Tengku Erry Nuradi M.Si, the Head of KPU RI, and representatives of participating political parties attended the cooperation event between KPU Sumut and the nine universities.
