Dr. Amir Husin, S.T., M.T., a lecturer in the Environmental Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), has been appointed as an Environmental Expert for the Environmental Feasibility Assessment Team (Tim Uji Kelayakan Lingkungan Hidup/TUKLH) based in Medan. The appointment was made pursuant to a decision issued by the Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency of the Republic of Indonesia dated May 25, 2026.
As part of his responsibilities, Dr. Amir Husin, S.T., M.T., participated online in a meeting of the Committee for the Assessment of ANDAL, RKL, and RPL Documents on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. The meeting discussed the development of the Bunda Thamrin University Building and supporting facilities by the Gleni Foundation in Medan.
During the review of the ANDAL document, Dr. Amir Husin highlighted the consistency of laboratory wastewater treatment containing hazardous and toxic materials (B3) with the Technical Approval document, the clarity of blackwater treatment through septic tanks, and the need to calculate the production of activated sludge from the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). His input also included a recommendation to reassess the discussion of generator emissions and the potential exposure of surrounding areas to pollutants.
In reviewing the RKL and RPL documents, Dr. Amir Husin proposed more measurable environmental management indicators, adequate waste storage facilities, the implementation of the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), as well as monitoring of waste volume, collection frequency, disease vectors, leachate, and the physical condition of waste management facilities. These recommendations constituted direct outputs of the expert's involvement in the assessment process.
This contribution most directly supports SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, as the assessment seeks to strengthen the management of environmental impacts associated with urban development. Discussions on wastewater and sanitation are also related to SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, while waste management and the implementation of the 3R principles support SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
Through the involvement of its lecturers in environmental assessment forums, the Faculty of Engineering, USU, reaffirms its commitment to providing engineering expertise to address community and government needs. Such knowledge-based contributions are expected to support more responsible, measurable, and sustainable development.
