The Professional Architecture Program of the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) presents an academic perspective on the role of local wisdom in climate-responsive architecture. The discussion was delivered as an expert opinion and public educational resource exploring the relationship between architecture, culture, civilization, and sustainable development.
The perspective emphasizes that civilizations evolve through the interaction between people, nature, and their surrounding environment. Indonesia's diverse ethnic communities have developed distinctive architectural traditions and local knowledge as adaptive responses to their respective environmental conditions.
Traditional Batak architecture is highlighted as an example through its use of locally sourced materials such as bamboo, sugar palm fiber (ijuk), and timber, as well as its incorporation of natural lighting and passive ventilation. These design elements are presented as valuable lessons for contemporary architecture, demonstrating how reliance on energy-intensive building materials and mechanical systems can be reduced through climate-responsive design.
The discussion also reflects on the shift toward modern architecture following the Second World War, which encouraged standardized building forms and the widespread use of materials such as glass and aluminum. From the perspective presented, selecting building materials and designs without considering local climatic conditions may increase indoor heat gain and reduce the effectiveness of natural ventilation.
This perspective primarily supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by promoting environmentally responsive building design that respects local identity and cultural heritage. It also contributes to SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production through its emphasis on sustainable material selection, and to SDG 13: Climate Action by encouraging architectural approaches that respond to the challenges of global warming.
Through its Professional Architecture Program, the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara, remains committed to advancing architectural education and scholarly discourse that bridges indigenous knowledge with contemporary challenges. This initiative is expected to encourage future architects and the wider community to recognize traditional wisdom as a valuable source of inspiration for creating more sustainable and climate-responsive built environments.
