The USU Faculty of Engineering team conducted a community service program at Amir Kusen Furniture SME in Medan to enhance production efficiency through appropriate technology. The program included the provision of a spindle machine, operational training, and production management counseling to support competitive and sustainable SMEs.
This Community Service activity was carried out by a team of lecturers from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), consisting of Ir. Nismah Panjaitan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng.; Dr. Ir. Nurhayati, M.T.; Dr. Ir. Dini Wahyuni, M.T.; and Dr. Tuti Sarma Sinaga, M.T., under the theme “Utilization of Technology for Production Efficiency at Amir Kusen Furniture SME.”
Amir Kusen Furniture SME is one of many door and frame manufacturers in Medan City, North Sumatra Province, located on Jalan Abdul Sani Muthalib, Terjun Subdistrict, Medan Marelan District.
In this community service activity, the Amir Kusen Furniture partner faced several problems, including:
Low production efficiency as door production was still conducted using traditional or manual methods.
Limited understanding of proper business production management.
Low production capacity due to limited tools and machinery.
The solutions provided by the Community Service Team to Amir Kusen Furniture SME included:
Provision of a spindle (shaper) machine to improve operational quality. The use of this machine replaces manual methods in shaping and cutting wood, thereby increasing production speed, precision, and reducing errors. This initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), emphasizing the role of technology and innovation in enhancing the competitiveness of small and medium industries.
Training on machine operation and maintenance to improve operators’ knowledge and skills. Operators were also equipped with supporting tools such as more accurate measuring instruments, safety equipment, and ergonomic tools to boost productivity and workplace safety. This effort contributes to SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by ensuring a more efficient and sustainable production process with minimal waste.
Counseling on good production management practices to enhance the partner’s productivity. The session aimed to raise awareness of effective production strategies. This aligns with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), helping SMEs expand their businesses and increase income.
