History

1963

The Department of Industrial Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of USU Medan should have been opened in 1963 as planned by the founders, known as Ir. Edward Parmonangan Hutapea and Ir. Toga Siregar as members. Since there were still many preparations that had not been completed, especially the availability of lecturers, the opening plan was postponed.

February 1965

The delay continued until 1965 and in the middle of that year according to the results of the USU Faculty of Engineering Lecturer Council meeting in early February 1965 under the leadership of the Dean of the USU Faculty of Engineering Ir. M. Sipahutar, the Department of Industrial Engineering was officially opened and became the FIRST Industrial Engineering Department in Indonesia. The results of the Lecturer Council meeting also stated that the Industrial Engineering Department to be opened had a curriculum that was based on technology, chemical engineering and scientific management.

June 1965

Following up on the results of the Lecturer Council meeting, then on June 10, 1965 under the leadership of Ir. Andar Manik as coordinator of the initiator agreed to officially open the Department of Industrial Engineering at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, University of North Sumatra. To get clearer guidelines and directions from the newly opened Department, the initiators were assigned to ITB to conduct comparative studies and consultations with several senior ITB lecturers including Dr. Ir. Mathias Aroef M.Sc, Dr. Ir. Kho Khian Ho, Dr. Ir. Saswinadi, Dr.Ing. K.T. Sirait and Ir. Suhadi Reksowardoyo.

August 1965

The number of students admitted for the first time based on the results of the selection at the beginning of August 1965 was 72 people out of a total of 100 examinees. Some of them who are known as students of the first batch of Industrial Engineering Department are Suhaimi Simatupang, Sukaria Sinulingga, Tanib Sembiring, Maringan Napitupulu, Kerno Sinuraya, Hasan Basri Siregar, Abdul Jabbar Rambe, and Sondang Sitorus.

September 1965

The purpose of Industrial Engineering education is clearly stated, namely educating students to produce strata-1 graduates who have expertise / skills in various sectors, especially in the manufacturing and service industry sectors. According to Ir. Edward Parmonangan Hutapea (better known as Ir. E.P. Hutapea), the word "industry" in the term industrial engineering comes from the word "industrious" which means diligent. "You will be educated to become industrial engineering graduates, namely people who have the ability to think industrially and industriously," he said in his briefing when welcoming the first lecture in early September 1965.

1967

Ir. Atastina Sri Basuki decided to change her employment status to become a permanent USU lecturer at the Department of Industrial Engineering. Thus, Ir. Atastina Sri Basuki is the first permanent lecturer of the USU Industrial Engineering Department.

1968

Dr. Pangestu Sugondo, a leader of Pantja Niaga State Company, was successfully recruited by the Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering as a non-permanent lecturer. He is a graduate of Chemical Engineering ITB and Master of Science in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. His presence in USU Industrial Engineering is very beneficial because he not only gives lectures but also reforms the curriculum gradually so that it approaches the standard Industrial Engineering curriculum. He lectured in the subjects of Production Management, Engineering Economics, and Plant Layout. The first two mentioned subjects were done as a correction to the same subjects given previously by lecturers who did not have a background in Industrial Engineering.

1969

In 1969, a young lecturer who graduated from Chemical Engineering ITB named Ir. Parhimpunan Siregar rejoined and was later appointed by Ir. E.P. Hutapea to be the Secretary of the Department which had never existed before. The existence of Ir. Parhimpunan Siregar did not last long because he got a new job outside the university. In mid 1969, the Faculty of Engineering of USU had a new building on the USU Campus located in Padang Bulan Medan. Some faculties that had already entered the USU Campus were the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Medicine. Although the Faculty of Engineering had moved to the Padang Bulan Campus, only administrative activities could run because the arrangement of building space for each academic activity in each Department had not been completed. In connection with this, lecture activities on Jl. Gandhi and Jl. Sun Yat Sen are still being carried out.

1970

After the departure of Ir. Parhimpunan Siregar in early 1970, Ir. Tabas Pandia, former President Director of PN Mekatani, who later accompanied Ir. E.P. Hutapea as Secretary of the Department, also joined. At the beginning of 1970, academic activities were gradually held at the USU Campus including the selection of new student admissions. In line with lecture activities in the new building, several laboratories have begun to be owned by the Department of Industrial Engineering and operate, including the Basic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry Laboratories. Until the end of 1970, all academic activities of the Faculty of Engineering were fully located on the USU Campus. The lecture building at Jn. Gandhi 52 then turned into a residence for some lecturers and the building on Jl. Sun Yat Sen was handed back to the military authorities.

February 1970

In connection with the limited laboratory facilities owned and also for the maturation of students' insights before completing studies in Industrial Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering USU, the leadership of the Department made a provision that each student had to take part in some academic activities at ITB at their own expense. The first departure was made in February 1970 by riding the Kurnia freighter. In addition to practicum, the students were given various additional lectures by ITB lecturers, among others by the Head of the Chemical Engineering Department, Dr. Ir. Saswinadi, Ir. Wibowo and Ir. Parkesit. All activities at ITB lasted until April. The departure of students to ITB lasted up to 4 periods and was stopped because the Operations Unit laboratory with quite complete facilities was available at the USU Industrial Engineering Department.

1971

In 1971, the Department of Industrial Engineering utilized Dr. Ir. Sawinadi from Chemical Engineering ITB as a flying lecturer for various activities such as giving special lectures, guiding students in the final project and also being an examiner at the Undergraduate Examination Session. At the initiative of Dr. Ir. Sawinadi, the Unit of Operations practicum can be conducted at ITB. In addition to Dr. Ir. Saswinadi, several other flying lecturers who were instrumental in fostering and developing the Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering USU were Ir. M. Faisal MSc, Dr. Prastowo Nambar MSc, and Dr. Ir. Harsono Taroepratjeka MSc. all three from Industrial Engineering ITB.

1978

Dr. Ir. Harsono Taroepratjeka who joined the Department of Industrial Engineering in 1978 not only gave lectures and became an examining lecturer but was later asked to become Chairman of the Department of Industrial Engineering. The presence of Dr. Ir. Harsono Taroepratjeka MSc as Chair of the USU Industrial Engineering Department further strengthens the implementation of various academic activities including curriculum development, structuring undergraduate examination sessions and maturing young lecturers to develop into reliable lecturers.

1981

The Directorate General of Higher Education called the Heads of Departments and delegates from all Departments in the State Faculties of Engineering throughout Indonesia to deliberate in Bandung about the curriculum in an effort to establish a national curriculum (Kurnas). The national meeting succeeded in formulating a national curriculum to characterize higher engineering education. Each Department can then complement the curriculum with local content tailored to the potential of their respective regions.

December 1983

In 1983 based on the Decree of the Minister of P and K with No. 0174/O/1983, dated March 14, 1983 and No. 0535/O/1983 dated December 8, 1983, the name of the Department of Industrial Engineering changed to the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management. In line with the name change, curriculum adjustments were also made with the addition of management subjects with an increasing number of credits.
