The USU Faculty of Engineering team conducted an earthquake mitigation program using Augmented Reality and virtual evacuation simulation for children in Kampung Nelayan Seberang, Belawan.

Through a community service program titled “Enhancing Earthquake Mitigation Awareness for Children in Kampung Nelayan Seberang through Augmented Reality and Virtual Evacuation Simulation,” led by Dr. Ir. Rahmi Karolina, S.T., M.T., IPM., GP., together with Prof. Ar. Ir. Hilma Tamiami Fachrudin, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., GP., IAI, and Rahmi Meilina Sari, S.T., M.M.(T) from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), the team focused on increasing the knowledge and preparedness of children in Kampung Nelayan Seberang, Belawan — a coastal area with high earthquake and tsunami risk.

In this program, the team developed AR Card Techtonic, an interactive Augmented Reality (AR)-based card featuring 3D animations that illustrate earthquake safety steps. Using a smartphone camera, children can view animated simulations of earthquakes, evacuation routes, and proper shelter techniques.

In addition, the team introduced virtual evacuation simulations, educational mitigation games, as well as interactive videos and storybooks as learning support materials. The activity was carried out directly in Kampung Nelayan Seberang, Belawan, involving more than 100 participants, including children, teachers, and parents.

The team hopes this activity can serve as a model for technology-based disaster mitigation education that can be implemented in other coastal schools across Indonesia.
