Opinion by Prof. Renita Manurung: Harnessing Energy from Plastic Waste and Coffee Grounds MEDAN — The increasing demand for energy goes hand in hand with increasingly complex environmental challenges. On the one hand, population growth and industrial activities are driving continuously increasing energy demand. On the other hand, the volume of waste is also increasing, and not all of it can yet be managed as valuable resources. This condition calls for new approaches that not only address waste problems but also open opportunities to utilize waste as an alternative energy source. 10 September 2026

Mining Engineering Program at USU Faculty of Engineering Welcomes Students from SMKN 2 Batang Toru for Field Work Practice The Mining Engineering Program at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), welcomed students from SMKN 2 Batang Toru to participate in a six-month Field Work Practice program. The program serves as an implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka (Independent Curriculum) and the Diktisaintek Berdampak (Impact-Oriented Higher Education) initiative. 08 September 2026

This initiative aims to identify and develop creative ideas, foster innovation, and strengthen students’ collaborative skills. Excursion Study 2026: HIMTI Goes To Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Indonesia Medan, September 8, 2026 — In order to broaden academic insight and increase student understanding regarding the application of Industrial Engineering in the working world, the Insight Development Division of the Industrial Engineering Student Association (HIMTI) Faculty of Engineering Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) organized Excursion Study 2026 by visiting Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Indonesia – Medan Plant. This activity was attended by students of the Undergraduate Program in Industrial Engineering USU as a form of out-of-class learning connecting theoretical concepts from lectures with real practices in the manufacturing industry environment. 08 September 2026

FT USU Advances Collaboration with ESDM Training Center to Strengthen Underground Mining Competencies The Mining Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), is advancing plans for a strategic collaboration with the ESDM Underground Mining Training Center in Sawahlunto. An internal coordination meeting with the staff of the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Internationalization was held to discuss the Draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Implementation Agreement (IA), aimed at strengthening collaboration in education, training, research, community service, and the sustainable development of human resource competencies in underground mining. 07 September 2026

USU Supports the National Food Self-Sufficiency Program: Faculty of Engineering Lecturer Conducts Community Service Activity in Karo Regency Faculty of Engineering lecturers conducted a community service activity in the form of technical assistance through the inspection of the productivity and quality of deep-drilled wells in Karo Regency. This community service activity aimed to ensure that the water infrastructure functions optimally to support agricultural water needs, increase community productivity, and contribute to Indonesia’s national food self-sufficiency program. 07 September 2026
